Day Nine – The Race

9/21 Days of Prayer

READ:

Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV)
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Have you ever had someone cheer for you from the stands? It’s a great feeling to know people are on your side and they believe in you! My mom was always my biggest cheerleader at baseball games. Every time I got up to bat she was yelling, “Knock it out of the park, son!” She believed in me and was there to cheer me on. That’s why I love this passage of scripture so much.

The Bible says we are in a race and we are surrounded by “a cloud of witnesses.”

I believe there are people in heaven cheering us on. Can you imagine Noah in the stands cheering? Or what about Abraham? Or Peter? I like to think they are, but I’m positive that Jesus is cheering us on. He is our advocate. He’s cheering you on every time you wake up and all day long until you go to bed. He believes in you and knows your potential to make a difference in this world.

PRAY:

Lord, Thank you for believing in me, and for giving me time, talent and treasure to use on this earth. Help me to run the race You’ve set before me well. In Jesus name, Amen.

Day Eight – Conquerors

8/21 Days of Prayer

READ:

Romans 8:37 (NKJV)
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
I still think the best example I’ve seen for being “more than a conqueror” was in the moments after a boxing match. The man had fought 8 rounds before knocking his opponent to the ground, securing the victory. The boxer was tired, sweaty, and bloody, but he was victorious! That’s when his wife got into the ring, dressed to the nines, grabbed the check, and held it in the air. She hadn’t fought for that check but she had relationship with the one that had won it all. That’s what being more than a conqueror looks like to me! I know that I didn’t do anything to earn eternal life, grace, mercy, healing, joy, or peace, but I have a relationship with Jesus – and He won all of that and so much more for me!

It’s not because of what we’ve done, it’s because of what He’s done.

Maybe you need to be reminded today of who you belong to. You are a child of God! He is victorious in every situation and every circumstance. You, my friend, are His. And because you are His, you are more than a conqueror in Him!!

PRAY:

Lord Jesus, thank you for winning the victory for me. Thank you that you have made me a child of God! Thank you that I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ my Lord and my Savior! In Jesus name, Amen.

Day Seven – The Church

7/21 Days of Prayer

READ:

Hebrews 10:25 (NKJV)
not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
Did you know that church was God’s idea? I love the church, and that’s not just because I’m a pastor. I loved it long before I became a pastor! It’s because being in church has changed my life. I can’t tell you how many times growing up that it felt like the pastor was speaking right to me and my situation. I can’t tell you how many times worship and the presence of God has changed my perspective. I can’t tell you how many times someone’s kind word, smile, or hug let me know that I wasn’t alone. Not to mention how much good I’ve been able to be a part of because I’ve served and given to a local church. There are times you have to miss church. We live in a world that is always moving, but there is one reason that should never make you miss church – and that’s because you feel unworthy.

The truth is, when you feel at your lowest and weakest is the time you need church the most!

Friend, no matter what you’ve done or what mistakes you’ve made, Jesus loves you and His grace is sufficient. Thank God that He is faithful – even when we fall short.

PRAY:

Lord, thank you for giving me a church to belong to! Thank you for people that love me and support me. Thank you for your grace and your mercy. Thank you that I get to be a part of Your church that’s making a difference in our communities and in our world!

Day Six – Led By the Spirit

6/21 Days of Prayer

READ:

Romans 8:14 (NKJV)
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
When I was growing up, we loved to play a game called “follow the leader.” If you’ve never played it, it’s a very simple game where you have one leader and everyone else has to follow that leader.

Did you know that the Holy Spirit wants to be your leader?

He wants to guide and direct you. He wants to give you wisdom and peace and help you to make good decisions. A lot of times, we forget to ask Him for help though. We will call our friends and ask advice (which is great – sometimes), but the first thing we should do is ask God for advice and then listen to what He is saying. God speaks to us in a lot of different ways. Through His word, through others, in a sermon, through a still small voice. God can get the message to you if you will just be willing to listen and be led by Him.

PRAY:

Lord, help me to be led by your Holy Spirit. Give me wisdom and peace. Help me to be more sensitive to your leading and your guidance in my life. In Jesus name, Amen

Tip: It takes time to learn to hear God’s voice in your life. As you are learning, there are some helpful things to keep in mind:

  1. Ask people that you know are being led by God for advice and talk to them about what you feel God is saying.
  2. Don’t play the “God Said“ card too quickly. It’s wiser to use “I feel like God is saying” because “God Said” is final.
  3. God will NEVER – I repeat, NEVER – tell you anything that is contrary to the Bible! If it goes against His word, it’s not from God!

Day Five – Give Thanks

5/21 Days of Prayer

READ:

Ephesians 1:16 (NIV)

I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

“Thank You!” It’s two very simple words but sometimes we forget to say them. When my kids were little, this was a battle we fought many times. I would hand them something and say, “What do you say? What do you say?” until the words finally crept out of their tiny little mouths. I heard someone the other day say that every morning, they wake up and write down 3 things they are thankful for and every night before they go to bed they do the same. What a powerful practice!

Setting your mind on the things that you’re thankful for every morning and every evening has the power to change our focus from what’s wrong to what’s right.

So, what are you thankful for?

PRAY:

Lord, forgive me for not saying thank you enough for all the blessings in my life. Thank you so much for Your outpouring of love, grace, love, and mercy in my life. Jesus, thank you for dying on a cross for me, for taking my shame, my sin, and my sickness, and for giving me eternal life. In Jesus name, Amen.

Day Four – His Word

4/21 Days of Prayer

READ:

James 1:22 (NKJV)
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Have you ever watched an infomercial on working out and thought, “This is the thing that will give me the 6-pack abs I’ve dreamed of all my life!!!” I’ve done this lots of times. But I know that until I go online, purchase the videos, and start doing the workouts my abs will remain hidden. Sometimes we do this with the word of God.

We know it has the power to make us stronger, wiser, happier, and more loving, but sometimes we are satisfied with reading it and aren’t willing to start doing what it’s telling us to do.

James is basically telling us, it’s one thing to hear the word, but when you start doing what it says, it has the power to change everything in your life.

PRAY:

Lord, give me a passion for Your word and help me to put into practice the things that I see in it. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tip: Sometimes people ask where they should start reading their Bible. I usually tell them to start in John and read until you hit Revelations… and then start again.
